As a player

  • Consistency: The rehair is the same every time. No more worries if the hair is good enough.
  • longer lasting: not only if you play regularly but also if you don’t, because moths don’t find newrehair tasty.
  • Easy cleaning
  • Better than good enough sound
  • Unfortunately the rehair will not be cheaper. The cost of materials is only about 10% on a rehair, the biggest part is labor. 

As a luthier 

  • No more waste: even if you are buying pre-sorted traditional hair, some of it does not pass muster. Putting it in the bin, in essence, raises the cost by the percentage you trash. 
  • Longer-lasting: In a rental situation, you save on rehair labor, having to rehair less frequently.
  • No more sourcing hassle
  • No more critters: Storing bigger quantities of trad hair is a pain. Newrehair: just put it in a drawer and forget about it. 
  • More rehairs per kg: New rehair is uniform in diameter; thus the volume of hair is defined at the tip, not as with trad hair at the frog ( see installation guide). This results in fewer fibres on each rehair without compromising quality one bit. Fewer fibers = less material = the kilogram will last for more rehairs.
  • No relearning how you rehair: You can use the same methods you always did. A couple of tweaks, nothing major.

Newrehair sounds the same as a traditional rehair.
How is sound produced? By sticking and slipping. Rosin coated fibres move across a string. Very briefly both stick together, then part and stick together again.   This continuous cycle creates physical waves that resonate into sound.
Newrehair or traditional hair never actually touches the string, it’s the rosin. 

Newrehair is a novel product, that does not require a new rosin just keep using the one you prefer. However the application and rosin behaviour is a bit different. Initially more rosin is needed. If you think your done, you are not , just keep going for a bit more. You have been coating horse hair all your life, there is a bit of a learning curve what is enough. 
Using more rosin also applies to reapplications. Ever forgot to freshly rosin up before a concert on conventional hair? You slowly loose grip during the concert and hope you make it to the end slip sliding away. Newrehair is less forgiving in that respect. Not enough rosin, you will not get away with it for as long. You can’t get away from brushing your teeth once a week for very long either. Just apply a bit more and more frequently.

Initially it was a personal problem of not being able to get consistent hair quality at an acceptable price.  Artificial hair was not quite at pro levels. Both us fans of history got to thinking. Why did most players switch from gut /metal to synthetic strings?
Gut has a great sound but they are susceptible to humidity and more important they 10 hours+ to hold a true tone. In other words you are playing to get the string into optimal condition.
Steel is does not have these drawbacks, but sounds metallic (no nobel prize awarded for that discovery)
In 1970 the fist synthetic core string hit the market. It cut “playing for the sting time” in half. Today its closer to 2 hours with no prior conditioning. It was longer lasting than gut and also very humidity stable. So people loved it? Nope.  The product struggled. The sentiment was: Never change a running system, even if it was not running very good. It took years for Dominant by Thomastik to get accepted.  Today gut/steel is niche, synthetic is standard.  There will never be the true gut feel from a synth string, just as horse hair will always has a bit different feel if optimal. How often is it optimal and how often to you play gut sting? If you ever played synthetic stings (Thomastik, Pirastro, Larsen,…) Newrehair is just the next logical step. Be sceptical , but don’t be on the wrong side of history.

What is different?
Not much. There are many ways to rehair a bow and you can keep your system with newrehair. You can do it wet; use the same string to tie the strand. Use super glue or sealing wax, whatever you prefer. Some practices (like wetting) are not necessary but might feel odd to skip; you do you.

What is really different?

  • Hair diameter: Traditional hair is conical by nature, thinner at the end.  Hair volume at the frog will be more than at the tip. With newrehair, the diameter is uniform. Measure the volume at the tip!  Filling the frog end with newrehair will result in having to much volume at the tip. Remember uniform not conical. 
  • Length of strand: A traditional rehair is forgiving; wet, stretch, heat it. You can make it fit; we have all been there. Newrehair is what it is. It will take 3 or 4 tries to get the length right. Those tries are on us via the starter pack. We are confident you will figure it out, it’s difficult to explain, but easy to feel as a professional.
  • Rosin: you need more initially and also more for top ups. 

To us thats the million dollar question, we wish. Understandably we put a lot of  r&d into that question and it’s one thing we don’t answer. Also because it’s changing. Now in 2026 we are confident in delivering the first pro-level version, that we have tested for 2 years. Following compositional improvements are to follow.

You can’t just order. First we talk: you ask questions, we explain, you ask more questions. Then we send you a starter pack free of charge. After that, we are happy to sell to you. This offer will only cater to the educated. Newrehair is too important to us to be sold to any dick, tom and harry , prone to not having the experience and thus not getting the full benefit.

We are new old school. We have zero interest in your data, we would rather be working on product improvements. If you want to contact us we will have your email or phone number, but will not spam you in any way shape or form. We have been in the business so long, we probably know you anyways, if only even over a friend of a friend. Keep your data, we have no interest. No analytics, so sales pitch, never ever, we have better things to do and we hope you do too.
